Two Sun Devils Qualify for Match Play at U.S. Women's Amateur

Aug. 6, 2008

Arizona State senior women's golfer Azahara Munoz and incoming freshman Carlota Ciganda have qualified for match play of the 2008 U.S. Women's Amateur held at the 6,516 yard par 72 Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. Both Munoz and Ciganda are representing their home country of Spain.

Munoz shot a 1-under 143 (75-68) during the scoring round. The 2008 NCAA Individual Champion's score of 68 on round two was a round low. Munoz will be seeded eighth going into match play.

Ciganda, who will join the Sun Devils in January, shot a 1-under 143 (70-73) to qualify for match play. Ciganda, who won the 2007 Ladies' British Amateur over ASU's Anna Nordqvist, has been the No. 1 ranked female amateur in Europe the past two years. She is seeded seventh going into match play.

The U.S. Women's Amateur Championship will continue through August 10. Past Sun Devil U.S. Amateur champions include Amy Fruhwirth (1991), Joanne Gunderson-Carner (1957, 1960, 1962, 1966, 1968), Grace Park (1998), Pearl Sinn (1988) and Wendy Ward (1994).
